History and Background:
During the Byzantine time, artists use gold leaves as a medium in their artwork to capture and create a unique and religious environment. Back then, pure gold leaves are expensive and difficult to obtain. The process of making and applying gold leaves require a very high skill craftsmanship.

Goal: Create a silhouette project with experimenting the metal leaves and possibly transform into digital art.
Objective: Student will:
1) be able to identify the differences between gold leaves and metal leaves.
2) learn the characteristic of each materials.
3) apply techniques to create a silhouette project by using metal leaves.
4) discover the connection between silhouette and shaping/meaning by using metal leaves.
5) explore and transform their work into digital media through photoshop or related programs.
Requirements: create a metal leaves silhouette project and post it, refine it on the web.

Materials for demonstration
Introduction:
Ask students their knowledge about silhouette and metal leaves. How can they be connected? Why is it necessary to use traditional materials? How can it relate to our shaping meaning project? Introduce materials to students, and explain each of the materials’ characteristics, purposes, and history. Demonstrate the application of metal leaves and preparation for computing application.
Direction:
lesson 1
1) Make 20 drawings of bird(s) based on observation.
2) Prepare 5 3x3 formboards.
3) Color the formboards by using watercolor or color pencil.
4) Transform the drawings onto the formboards.
5) Apply wanda size onto the formboard and let it sit for at least a day or day and a half.
6) Apply gold leaf or metal leaf on wanda size.
7) Apply pressure on the metal leaf by using a cotton ball.
8) Remove excess metal leaf from the formboard.
lesson 2
1) Go on the internet.
2) Research materials/articles related to the golden birds.
3) Write a one page essay on your relationship to the golden bird.
4) Prepare a powerpoint presentation on your five golden bird images.
Closure:
Students will compare and contrast their ideas and products.
Students will develop an understanding of how to present their images.
